What Causes a Stitch?

The stitch. All runners know the misery they cause. They often seem to strike at random and can utterly ruin training or race performance. So what causes them? The general rule of thumb on this has been “we just don’t know” – scientists have been unable to find a conclusive answer to this running curse.

In his article “A Stitch in Time”, Alex Cook may provide the answer – reporting on a publication by Dr Darren Morton reviewing 14 studies, it seems the answer may (as may runners have suspected over the years) lie in or stomachs.
